May 5th 1939
In this series this week, we feature Arthur Ward, a member of the retail staff. Mr Ward has not always worked in the retail organisation, he started in the postal department in February, 1934, att the age of nineteen.
It was not long, however, before he applied for a transfer and became shop assistant in the Harrow road shoe store. The next year he went as salesman to Manor Park shop and within a few months was offered the managership of Faversham branch.
Mr Ward remained as manager at Faversham for nearly a year before being promoted to instructor in the retail school. His new job was teaching the retail system and book-keeping to prospective shopmanagers and salesmen.
After eighteen months in the school, he was transferred to the repairs section as a controller. There he gained considerable experience of the repairs business and returned to instructing in the school early this year.
