He joined the Bata Shoe Company at East Tilbury in 1937 and applied himself rising rapidly to the postion of Foreman in the Leather Factory.
In 1940 he carried his Department to win the Annual Spring Competition. He left in April 1941 to join the R.A.F. where he chose engineering and maintenance work, he proved to be a hard and conscientious worker and rose to the rank of Corporal

He was th son of Thomas Henry Arthur and Dorothy Alberta Tucker of West Norwood.
